Salt Air - Bay of Islands

Salt Air, New Zealand Air Service Operator, offers spectacular aeroplane or helicopter scenic flights around New Zealand's maritime playground the Bay of Islands as well as charter flights to any destination within New Zealand. Salt Air opened for business in December 1992 initially operating a Grumman Super Widgeon seaplane and business grew so well in the first season that the Bay of Islands was made a permanent base and an office was built at the downtown Paihia seaplane ramp.

Much of the East coast of the North is unreachable by road so land-based aircraft from the airports at Haruru Falls and Kerikeri were introduced. A half day scenic flight and four wheel drive tour to the top of New Zealand is available which involves flying to an airstrip at Cape Reinga (the top of New Zealand) and then a 4WD tour before returning to the airfield and flying back to the Bay of Islands.  The north bound flight travels over some fantastic scenery which includes bush clad hills, the deep Whangaroa Harbour, unspoilt Doubtless bay and of course the famous Ninety Mile Beach. We stop at an airfield called Shenstone Farm Airstrip, which is only 20 Km's by road from Cape Reinga.

Our first stop on the vehicle tour is the Cape Reinga lighthouse with it's spectacular views of the Tasman Sea and mighty Pacific Ocean merging together. Our next stop is just around the corner at beautiful Taputoputo Bay for morning or afternoon tea and a quick swim if desired. The last stop on the vehicle tour is the Te Paki quicksand stream with it's mighty sand dunes, sand sleds are provided for the more adventurous travellers among the group to try a bit of "Sand Surfing" if desired. The return flight follows the East coast of northland and takes in spectacular scenery such as Parengarenga Harbour, Great Exhibition Bay, Karikari Peninsular, Cavalli Islands and of course the Bay of Islands.
